Hi there!

What level are your characters? Are you saying that you can't hit them at all? What monsters have you encountered?

Hi,

I am level 14 and I can't touch Spectre or Banshee (for exemple) but I can hit mummy or skeleton king with melee weapons (not range weapons).
The message is ... but the attack as no effect.

I suppose it is because my weapons are not blessed.

Thanks again for your help.

Ah, the dreaded Spectre and Banshee. I was a bit oldschool when creating the undead monsters. Some such as zombies and skeletons can be hit with non magical weapons, (piercing attacks do no damage -- how do you stab a skeleton?!) but other high level undead can only be hit with blessed or silver weapons.

Also remember your character abilities. A Paladin will work wonders here and of course there's always magic.

Let me know how it goes!

Hey all.

Just finished the game this morning. I've been playing it off and on for a couple weeks or so. It was a very awesome game.

I loved the addition of the feats. That really set the character classes apart from each other. Granted, I only had a paladin, two warriors, and three mages, but the paladin wasn't simply a soft version of the warrior.

And the trap animation was really cool. I found myself avoiding Trap-Zapping while wandering around just to see if it was a new trap I hadn't seen.

The catacombs made me feel like I was really in the catacombs, especially wayyyyy down in level 2, and your dead start becoming zombies that attack you. Claustrophobia much? Speaking of the catacombs, I also loved how you could use torches as weapons. My warriors were two-handed proficient and I didn't want to burn a lot of mana, so I filled most of the excess inventory with torches and burned the monsters that were immune to ordinary damage.

What stuff didn't I like as much? I found myself relying more on my warriors damage instead of magic damage, though Energy Web is so, so helpful. I was lucky it was one of my first magic classes I picked. Also, in the beginning, I remade my mages to be able to hold longbows, which was their main attack during the game. They were more Mage/Rangers than anything. On a similar note, the only monster that I found susceptible to the Mystical Mana Drain was the Magician in Hachen Dael. None of the ones in the Catacombs had any mana to give up. I didn't try much in Moloch's tower, since each mana point is precious.

Another thing was that with Moloch's Tower, even though it had a lot of fearsome monsters in there that loved to hide in the back row *coughRedDragoncough*, I found it to be short. In terms of area, it was only about three quarters of a single level of the Catacombs.

Also, the other thing was that the monsters your party can summon seemed to be a bit glitchy. After a round or two of combat, their armor would drop to 0 permanently, no matter which one it was. Also, the Dancing Sword, my favorite out of them, eventually no longer attacked when I summoned it. I'd have to say it was about when it would be eligible for its fifth attack. I ended up leaving the slot blank for the rest of the game, since at zero armor class, even the most powerful Ogre I could summon got beat down quickly with its armor at zero.

All in all, those things were minor and this was such a great game to enjoy. The original Bard's Tale was by far my favorite, and I love how the look of the game was kept in this. I didn't find the puzzles in this too hard or too easy - they were just right, and they were fun.

I would so play a sequel to this, or an expansion to the current game. What's in the western part of the city past the West Gate? What's outside the City Gates? I'd so love to play more and find out.

Speaking of this, what exactly was the effect of the Wooden Cross on the evil characters? I'm guessing it was something like Fear and lowering defense. Also, what was the use of the Mirror that I got at the top of Moloch's Tower? I never did find a use for it.

Thanks again, and keep up the awesome work.

Wow! Great progress update; a lot to take in. Let me see...

Summoned monsters, I know, I know :(
A couple months after the game was released, I noticed some bugs around summoning but never got to fixing them and re-publishing. I had some help play testing, but overall I was the only one to play from start to finish so all the bugs never quite got hammered out.

Misc Items:

Wooden Cross -- A character can use this to keep some unholy monsters from attacking, like vampires, etc.

Mirror -- I had originally planned on adding more stone sight creatures but in the end only the Basilisk was added. If you hold up a mirror when it gazes upon you, it'll reflect back and kill it. A character can look into it if they're especially vain?

Regardless, thanks for the awesome update and I super glad people are still enjoying the game!

Love the game! Love it, love it, love it!

I'm working on the catacombs right now. Love the spell classes. I've taken a lot of time to raise my magicians up to the point that they both have chain lightning. Very cool!

My favorite spell is the exploding coin, though. Such a great image.

Anyway, I'm a writer. If you'd ever like to collaborate on a sequel to this game of some sort, let me know. If you'd like to check out my series, search for The Hands of Aldulan. I have some free audio stuff floating around that you might consider listening to.

My e-mail address - if you'd like to touch base - is ericradulski@excite.com.

Thanks again for an amazing game!

Hey there!

I just sent you an email but am letting others know that I check this blog regularly for posts and will respond!

The catacombs are quite hard! Good luck!

Wonderful, wonderful game. It plays a lot like it's original inspiration - but addresses all the annoying aspects of BT series. Feats are *great!*

Having useful things to do from the back-row slots is super as well.

I'm not very far (level 4) - just prowling the city. My last party wandered into the sewers at level 1 or 2 and met 3 grues. That was fun - though short-lived. (for them!)

I was noticing that when advancing levels any skill not improved seems to go down by 1.

Oh, I do miss the "Z" = "Summon Stone Elemental" while in the town from BT1, but that's the weenie in me.

Death and Drek!

Hey bubba,

Glad to hear you'r enjoying it so far!

Regarding the skill advancement bug, unfortunately I'm not currently doing any updates for Warrior's Tale. It's been a long time. Hopefully it doesn't hinder gameplay too much.

Keep me updated on your progress!

Finally picked the game back up and finished it. (had a little help with the map pack, but hey. A job and four kids keeps a guy occupied these days)

Very enjoyable. Tough final fight. Really enjoyed the retro romp. I like all the new little things. Having a theif up front, for example. Unlike the original, I played just fine with only one mage - which was great as it allowed me to have more classes in the party. I think my line up was:

Theif
Warrior
Paladin
Ranger
Bard
Wizard

I never did find holy water for the Bless Weapon spell for the paladin, but I made it through the game just fine anyway.

This is something I've been looking for a long time, a nice reconstruction of the classic map'n'hack design of Wizardry and Bard's Tale. The graphics were wonderful, right down to the duplication of the classic BT1 border pattern. The feats are a nice touch, and make melee classes more useful than they were in the original trilogy. I just wish it were longer, or had an open-source version that could work like the BT Construction Set.

The only thing I'd change (aside from bugs) would be the ease of running away from every fight, at least with a good rogue up front. I made it through all of the final tower with only two encounters.

Finished with
18 Rogue
18 Monk
18 Warrior
18 Ranger
19 Mage
20 Mage

and also leveled up a 10 Paladin to bless weapons.

Has anyone got this working on Vista? I'm running as administrator and emulating XP SP2 but Task Manager shows the process running at 50% cpu and nothing else happens. No visible sign of the program at all.

Any clues?

FYI.

There is a conflict between GameMaker v6.1 and Vista but... there is a fix. Go to http://wiki.yoyogames.com/index.php/Making_games_work_under_Windows_Vista for the details.

I now have Warrior's Tale working on a Vista laptop.

Thank you very much for creating this game! It had so much fun playing it.

My party consisted of:
Warrior
Paladin
Thief
Mage
Mage
Mage

Healing was a bit difficult in the beginning because only the Palaidn was able to cure wounds. But afer leveling up a bit, the three mages really came in handy.

The map pack was great! I like to draw maps, so I used about half of the map packs maps and drew the others by myself.

Oh and after the difficult beginning part, I had no problem solving the game. the mages were so powerful. The catacombs and even the tower were easy for my party. :)

I won the endfight by casting Mage Shield with the maximum mana boost possible and by casting ogre's strength on my thief. One of my mages was dead already but the thief's sneak attacks finished the badguy off. :)

It is really great to see how different you can play this game. Someone here had only one mage in his party. Great!

Thank you again very much for creating this game!

Hey Stephan, wow that's some heavy firepower!!! I usually only budget a single character towards magic in these party games but I see that it really pays off :)

Winning with a thief, eh? Can't say I could've forseen that...

Congrats on completing the game :) :)

Finished the game last night. Enjoyed the retro-Bard's Tale feeling. My party was 22nd-27th level, consisting of 3 fighters, 1 monk, 3 mages, and one paladin. I swapped characters in and out depending on the dungeon. Over the course of play (a couple weeks) I only had two character deaths. One was from a Scorpion, the other came when some of the flying monsters (devils) were able to attack poorly armored back-rank characters.

This was a lot of fun to play through. It seems as though the various bugs have been brought up, so no need to go there. I think I'll play it through with another party, this time exploring some of the other character classes.

Thank you for making this!

Hey dreadwinaard,

Awesome! Congrats on the victory :)

Sounds like you played pretty well if you only had 2 character deaths! (I was hoping those devil guys would throw a curve ball or two)

Glad you enjoyed the game and be sure to post what you think of the other classes too :)

The ranger character class is a nice addition. I loaded up with one monk, one fighter, one paladin, two rangers, and a spellcaster. Many more character deaths before I finished this time. I think if you can get two spellcasters to a decent level (in any Bard's Tale-like game) and properly protect them with meat shields (i.e. Fighters) you're good to go!

Last time I played through, I never lost a character during the catacombs levels, this time I was quite surprised to see what happened :)

I would like to say this was a fun little game. I wish it was a little bigger like everyone else. Both my son, who is relatively new to these kinds of games, and I, who grew up playing the first generation of these games, really like this.

My one disappointment was that sewers lv 3 did not have a secret passage to finish off the grid shape. Or if there is one it is very well hidden.

I had a couple of groups but used mostly the same setup. I may try an all fighter set next, being it is the War's tale.
First Monk unarmed, Pal 2hd, Bard 1 hd, Thief missile, Mage missile, Mage missile.
second group swapped out the Pal for War.
but with that in mind I easily could have done it with out both mages mostly used them for the compass, early on used to stop bleeding and heal. During combat they used a bow.

For those out there those have not found Holy water. I have, I do not remember where I acquired it from encounter or chest but I did find 1 vial. I have not used it to bless a weapon, did not want to waste it.

I have a compulsion to know all details about a game, including some that the programmers don’t want known. So with that said I have some tips to players that do not involve cheating. I could but will not tell you how to get a quadrillion gold piece, sorry Dave Hargrave.

1. don’t run if you can fight, I am not 100% sure but my believe is after a certain lv you may lose exp. not a lot but the programmers go out to 4 decimal places on most numbers, that would be 999.9999 exp even if you lose .0002 points running that could be the difference between lving and disappointment.

2. With that said, I would also suggest don’t cut it close on exp for lving make sure you have at least 1 extra exp point when you go to advance. Saving you from disappointment.

3. you need 250 exp to make lv 2 my suggestion is 251. then for every lv after that take next lv add 1 then multiply by 100,then add that to previous lv exp. i.e. for lv 3, (3+1)*100+251. 4*100+251, 400+251 =651. for lv 3.

4. As "Uncle"(copy right Warner Brothers) always says "Magic must defeat Magic." When you get to the Crypt and are up against the undead if for some reason you forgot to equip blessed, silver or magic weapons. Feats are considered magic. And a monk's ki strike is very effective.

5. If you have not figured this one out here is a cheap way to heal. Use your mage, Pal or Ran to heal all wound right before entering the guild hall, then when you enter guild hall all mana and feats will be restored.

6. If you don’t have a thief or mage to disarm traps a pair of thief gloves works well. and worn by a monk, same ac a leather gloves so does not effect his natural ac adjustment, allowing your other fighters to wear the more armored gauntlets.

7. I also have a list of all items in the game. And the best weapons are Blessed Nunchaku, 1 hd, unarmed, high Crush; Greatsword, 2 hd, Very High Slash; Dragon Horn Bow, missile, Very high Pierce.

8. Not mentioned in the manual. and could be useful in determining potential party members.

War have a max total of 4 attacks. 2 at lv 5, 3 at lv 9, and 4 at lv 13. Monks and Ran have a max of 3 attacks. 2 at lv 4 and 3 at lv 8. Pals gain a second attack at lv 5. all other class do not gain more attacks.

Skill points are also not mentioned. War and Monks receive 5 point each lv. Pals and Ran receive 4 points. Thief’s and Bards receive 3 points. Mages receive 2 points.

9. There is a direct correlation to the number of hit point received each lv and your con score. Base con is 10, less then that is not good, more then that is good. Each point over 10 multiply a percentage to determine hp gained.
War 90-110%
Monk 80-90%
Ran 65-80%
Pal 70-85%
Bard and Thief 50-65%
Mage 50%
Each may round up or down to make a whole number.

I want to again thank the programmers for making this game. I enjoyed every aspect of it very much. Honestly I have not delved this deep into a game in a very long time, thanks. I would look forward to an expansion to this game or series.
